International Women’s Day Breakfast 2009
BPW hosted a fundraising breakfast at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Thursday the 5th March 2009 as part of the 2009 International Women’s Day celebrations. Funds raised will be used for girl’s scholarships in 2009.
The breakfast was opened by Dame Carol Kidu, Hon. Minister for Community Development. Dame Kidu launched the morning’s event by lighting a candle in honour of all BPW associations around the world.
The guest speaker was a well known PNG businesswoman and journalist – Christina Kewa. Ms Kewa spoke on 3 major issues she feels need to be addressed in order to ensure equality for women and to break the cycle of violence and abuse imposed on women and girls in Papua New Guinea. These were; bride price, rape and polygamy. Ms Kewa’s book “Being a Woman in Papua New Guinea: From Grass Skirts and Ashes to Education and Global Changes” was on sale at the event, and is available through the University of PNG Bookshop.
The closing address was given by the head of AusAID in PNG, Mr Bill Costello, whose speech is available below by clicking on the following link;

BPW Worldwide Candlelighting Ceremony 2008
The BPW Candlelighting Ceremony was held at Parliament House at 12.00 noon on Friday 7th March. The Candlelighting Ceremony is celebrated annually in March by members of the BPW’s organisation in over 80 countries around the world. The ceremony celebrates the ambitions and achievements of the members of an organisation that has been operating internationally for over 80 years.
The Candlelighting Ceremony is also an opportunity to celebrate International Women’s Day and, in Papua New Guinea, the anniversary of the BPW’s Club of Port Moresby which was established 26 years ago. Dame Carol Kidu was one of the founding members and she has now been recognised with the award of Life Membership of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Port Moresby.
